Mission Statement

Animals for Life is dedicated to furthering the well being and quality of life for all animals with a focus on the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoptive placement of abused and abandoned companion animals while serving as an educational and informational resource for the community.

Animals for Life is a no-kill animal shelter located in Connecticut. We adopt homeless cats and dogs into loving families. Every pet in our care receives a veterinary examination, vaccinations and is spayed or neutered prior to adoption. If you are interested in adopting a loving pet to add to your family, please visit our shelter in Middlebury. We have dogs and cats of many ages, sizes and breeds who are awaiting adoption! Animals for Life makes a lifetime commitment to every AFL animal, and our mission does not end with adoption. AFL volunteers will follow up with you after you adopt your new pet to offer advice, support, and resource services, should you need them. If you have any questions about our organization or about the animals in our care, we want to hear from you!

Accomplishments

  • Since 1996, Animals for Life has rescued and rehomed more than 3,800 dogs & cats.

  • Working relationships have been established with other shelters and humane organizations throughout Connecticut.

  • Dog and cat adoptions are held regularly at our shelter, housed within the Middlebury Animal Control Facility, in partnership with the Town of Middlebury.

  • All animals receive behavior evaluation and are fully vetted and spayed/neutered prior to adoption.

  • Our network of foster homes offers one-on-one cared and training for dogs and cats that do not thrive in the shelter setting.

  • Our mission includes working with families who can no longer care for their animals due to major life changes including divorce, illness, lost jobs, or the loss of a loved one.

  • The Home to Home Program enables animals to remain with their families until an adoptive home can be found.

  • AFL maintains a telephone Help Line to address animal related issues in our service area.

  • In 2005, an AFL website was launched which helps us to distribute information about animals in need, upcoming events and general program information.  Visitors can move seamlessly between our website and our list of available pets on Petfinder.com

  • Humane education is an important component of our programs.  We offer schools, youth groups and scouting troops educational information on animal care.
Goals

  • Increase the number of animals saved by expanding financial and networking resources.

  • Augment our programs to better address the needs of animals and their families.

  • Expand our website to include educational information on pet care, behavior, and training.

  • Reach out to a greater number of young people, in an effort to educate them about animal care and rescue.

  • Broaden partnerships with individuals & groups committed to addressing the severe feral cat overpopulation problem in Connecticut.
Commitment

Animals for Life serves our communities by matching homeless cats and dogs with families and individual who are looking for loving pets and companions.  Every AFL animal receives a veterinary examination, and all appropriate tests and inoculations prior to adoption.  There is a rigorous screening process with all potential adopters to afford the best match between the animals in our care and loving families.

Our Regional Telephone Help Line enables us to assist the many animals who are lost, abandoned, or are victims of abuse.  Additionally, concerned owners who must give up their pets and want to place them in good homes contact us for assistance.  In the past, euthanasia was viewed as the sole alternative since many towns have regulations against sheltering owner-release animals.  Animals for Life and other rescue organizations like us are committed to offering a life saving alternative.

In addition to sheltering dogs and cats at the Middlebury, Connecticut facility, a volunteer network has been created for fostering companion animals.  Fostering enables the rescued animal to be socialized, take part in family life, and receive the kind of love, attention, and structure that builds confidence and stability.

Animals for Life makes a lifetime commitment to every AFL animal rescued, and our mission does not end with adoption.  There is follow up with advice, support, and resource services, including trainers and behaviorists, for greater assurance of the successful integration of the pet into their new family.
